Generally speaking, what would we consider as being the most damaging U.S. Presidency ever? My answer is, that of William Jefferson Clinton! Yes, I’ve already divulged my “heads and tails above the rest” choice since that’s approximately how long it took me to make it…close to instantaneously. Most likely, I’ve also answered the question that many of you were tossing about in your minds upon reading this article‘s heading, thinking…”hmmm, what actually WAS the most damaging U.S. Presidency ever?” Arguably, the question could be rephrased a bit to make it more specific and then asked, “what Presidential term (or terms) did serve to inflict the MOST irreversible damage on our country’s well-being going forward?” Same question just posed a bit differently, and in my opinion the answer remains the same.
Now, I’m certainly aware that an argument could be made for many others dating back to the inception of our country but as for any modern-day, post-industrial age President, I can (and will) make a STRONG argument for the label of “most damaging” aptly being applied to the eight-year (1993-2001), two-term Clinton stay in the White House. Additionally, for the sake of keeping this commentary clean, I’ve chosen to (from this point forth anyway) omit any direct reference to the “Monica Lewinski scandal”…since it really had nothing to do with Clinton’s Administration, not that we know of anyway. Once again (and in this instance regarding the morality of our past Presidents), an argument could be made that there were far greater letches than Clinton who’d served in the nation’s Oval Office. However, we’ll leave that topic “lie” to perhaps be addressed at a later date.
In retrospect (and based on her own political aspirations and success) we can see that the Clinton Presidency was actually a two-headed monster. Though William was actually the elected one, it’s blatantly obvious that Hillary had a profound impact on William’s platform, policies and Socialism flavored doctrine. It has also become apparent that Hillary made sure of women being chosen for cabinet positions and other appointments should a woman be even remotely qualified for the post, with far more qualified men routinely being over-looked as her ultra-liberal, feminist grounded agenda almost immediately (post inauguration) kicked into high-gear.
With that understanding we’ve actually uncovered the first act of irreparable damage inflicted by the Clinton’s since we as a Republic were NOT designed to have two acting Presidents in office and why? Because it just doesn’t work that way, and anyone with a lick of common-sense would understand that. Any seated President has a huge staff of advisors and a Vice President for that matter from which he can draw opinions, etc. Given the scope of their position, the last thing any elected President needs to deal with is the added pressure of being forced to consider the opinions, suggestions, wishes and possibly even demands of the First Lady, his supposed romantic or “love” interest.
As the Clinton years went by, the administration increasingly espoused an attitude that reeked of Socialist principals that manifested themselves in William’s gun grabbing efforts (piddling all over our 2nd Amendment rights) coupled with Hillary’s “it takes a village” non-sense that set the wheels in motion to effectively crush what we as a society had come to know as traditional family values. Parents for all practical purposes saw their ability to raise their own children as seen fit stolen out from underneath them, all under the ill-advised guise of expanding “children’s rights”…which in effect (and in the eyes of the law) did serve to make children “co-equal” with their parents in many regards, the results of which has been nothing less than disastrous. Thanks to the combined efforts of the Clintons, we Americans had basically awaken one morning to discover that our government was “on our tails” in new and unforeseen ways, out not only in search of the guns we’d use for hunting, recreation and self-defense purposes but also with the intent of becoming the new “foster parents” of the children we’d brought into the world…with public schools and social services programs being granted unprecedented and sweeping powers in regard to decisions made for our own flesh and blood. For this we have none other than quasi-President Hillary Clinton to thank, though I’m pretty certain that President William Clinton was in complete agreement, being that he most likely knew all-to-well of the consequences to opposing Hillary’s “suggestions”.
It could be said that these two for-mentioned actions alone would be sufficient enough to award the title of “most damaging” to the Clinton Presidency and it would be hard to effectively argue against it….since the ramifications of both had and will continue to have a nightmarish (Cancer like) effect on most every aspect of American society. The term and title of “left-wing“ AND “liberal” took on new meaning over the eight year Clinton span, and never before had the Executive Branch endeavored to so completely intrude on the American family. Sadly enough, most American’s simply took it all in stride. Worse yet, Socialism in American politics (spread via policy and legislation throughout American society) was off and running.
President William Clinton did his share of executive Order signing as well during his time in Office (done typically to avoid Congressional debate), 364 of them to be exact. The most troubling would be his January 24, 1995 signing of Executive Order Number 12947 that put into place a limited trade embargo in accordance with The National Emergencies Act, aimed at punishing “Terrorists Who Threaten to Disrupt The Middle East Peace Process.” On paper, such an Executive Order would seem to be completely justifiable but in reality it served to broaden the scope of what defines and constitutes being a “terrorist” and in 1998 the national emergency was expanded to include new-comer Osama bin Laden (even though bin Laden had been a CIA backed Mujahideen asset since the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan). This order had been renewed by President G.W. Bush during his two terms and most recently (in 2010) by Obama, and had also been exponentially expanded by both. Many Executive Branch watch-dogs believe Clinton to have been one of the biggest abusers of the Executive Order (certainly raising the bar in its use)…with President G.W. Bush then following suite, I suppose not about to be out-done by a Democrat in that regard.
This commentary can not be concluded without adding that during the Clinton Presidency (under his watch) we were witness to the WACO debacle, the Montana Freemen prosecutions, the OKC bombing conspiracy and the Elian Gonzalez fiasco, all involving Hillary Clinton’s Attorney General appointee, Janet Reno. I’d also be amiss not to interject at this point that the Clinton’s Arkansas history had come back to haunt them in a big way during their eight years in office…with the S&L scandal, the Vince Foster cover-up, allegations of sexual harassment, allegations of fraud, money laundering and numerous other money related improprieties, all serving to cast an ever darkening shadow upon their personal and political history. It’s also widely accepted that the FBI, ATF, DEA, CIA and other agencies within the Federal law enforcement and intelligence gathering community saw their roles expanded and their powers increased under Clinton, all done in attempt to embolden “big brother”…with the goal of forcing a radical Socialist agenda down the American public’s throat.
For those of us who view each and every Presidential term as being of great significance, I believe I’ve made a short but strong case for the two-headed Clinton Presidency (spanning 1993-2001) as one that was INCREDIBLY damaging to the very fabric of our Republic, bringing us dangerously close to being a full-blown Socialistic society that included tearing down the traditional family unit as it was but will never be known again.
Slinking off into the sunset (post Presidency), William retired to a life of memoir/book writing and speech/appearance making while Hillary (riding William’s coat-tails) was elected Senator of New York, ran for (but lost) a 2008 bid for the Oval Office, and as the Democratic Party “runner-up” was gratuitously named Secretary of State by President Obama. I had always viewed the Clinton’s as being two very dangerous individuals, constructed with weak moral and ethical fabric and time has only served to prove myself and others who believed as I did correct. Unfortunately, we’ll forever be reminded of just how right we were as NO area of everyday life was left untouched and unchanged by the Clinton’s “most damaging” Presidential tenure.
